Dear fifth grade families,
This week we start PARCC testing. PARCC testing has replaced TCAP. Please make sure that students get a good night sleep and eat a healthy breakfast. In an effort to alleviate some potential stress, there will be NO HOMEWORK and NO TUTORING March 16 - March 27. We will also send home Balarat information tomorrow, March 17, 2015. Look for a blue Denver Public Schools Balarat Registration form. Please fill this out in its entirety and return it to school as soon as possible. We also have several pink medical forms that have not been returned. We will be emailing and calling for parents this week for those that are still missing. The Balarat Parent Information Meeting is on March 25, 2015. Erik Hurst can answer any questions about Balarat at that time. Ms. Zendle would like to have her annual Fraction, Decimal, Percent Party during math class on Friday, March 27, 2015. In order to purchase supplies, please send a $1.00 donation that will go towards the healthy snacks and fun materials for the party? Sincerely, Ms. Martinez & Ms. Zendle Dear 5th grade families,
We are very excited to be going to Balarat again this year! Balarat is an outdoor education program run by Denver Public Schools. Students will stay overnight and participate in team building activities, as well as learn about the great outdoors. We encourage everyone to go to the Balarat website linked here to learn more information. Our dates, which are determined by DPS, are as follows. UPDATED DATES AS OF 3-9-15.
Our contact person for Balarat is Erik Hurst. He will be coming to Denver Green School on March 25 to present to students and parents. We are inviting all 5th grade parents to DGS at 5:00pm for the informative meeting. Erik can answer any and all questions that you have at that time. We will send home a paper invitation closer to the date and we will also send out a reminder email! Thanks, Ms. Martinez and Ms. Zendle We had a successful trip to Ameritowne on Tuesday. Thank you for all of the parent support. The students learned a lot about balancing a checkbook and work ethic. They will demonstrate these skills further at our Community Day celebration in April! Take a look at some pictures.
We have been studying the time period of the American Revolution and Constitution in reading and writing. In reading, students are working through stations and gathering information about the different perspectives of events at that time, learning about timelines, reading biographies and writing biographical essays, taking Cornell Notes on historical videos, and conducting book clubs about historical fiction books regarding the American Revolution. Simultaneously, we are also getting ready for PARCC testing! It's a lot and we are working hard each and every day. In writing, we are working on historical fiction narratives based during the time of the American Revolution. Students have researched many famous figures and are creating a timeline of important events.
Some topics to ask your children about are (this is not a full list): French and Indian War Stamp Act Intolerable Acts Townshend Acts Boston Tea Party Boston Massacre Benjamin Franklin Phillis Wheatley George Washington Crispus Attucks Thomas Jefferson Abigail Adams |
