We had a pesto party! We 5th graders have made fresh pesto with the vegetation from the 5th grade garden. People made like chefs and made delicious pesto. Mr. Potter helped harvest the basil and other vegetables. Check our website later for photos. They will be uploaded shortly. EFS UPDATEIn EFS we have been working to make a sustainable change. For example, a change some of us chose was to use less water. These changes are based on how the Native Americans lived such a sustainable life. Everyone has chosen a change to live a sustainable lifestyle. People in EFS will write a five paragraph essay and a letter from Chief Powhatan (Wahunsonacock) . READING UPDATEIn reading we have been learning about the settlement Jamestown, Virginia. We have been doing stations to learn about Jamestown and how the colonists lived and died. Please subscribe to our old timey newspaper The Jamestown Gazette. The Jamestown Gazette is a fake newspaper that we will be writing and bringing home every Friday so that you can hear what we have been doing or you can look on here like you are doing right now. MATH UPDATEIn math we have been learning to multiply and divide three digit numbers. We have been doing that with iconic and symbolic models. Also there will be a math test happening Tuesday November 3, Wednesday November 4, and Thursday November 5. WRITING UPDATEIn writing we have been writing a non-history essay. We had choices to write from a good class pet to the best video game. These essays will be five paragraphs long. After we learn how to write a five paragraph essay we will write a essay about Jamestown, Virginia. This post was written by Miles Overby. Our first Demonstration Night is this Thursday evening from 5:00pm - 6:30pm.
ECE - 3rd grade from 5:00 - 5:40 4th grade - 8th grade from 5:50 - 6:30 Our students have been working hard on making positive changes in their lives. They are ready to present their ideas and ask for you help! Here is the liability waiver if it has not been signed and returned already. Students cannot go on this excursion without the liability waiver signed. Please bring a sack lunch for this excursion. In Module 1, students explored the relationships of adjacent units on the place value chart to generalize whole number algorithms to decimal fraction operations. In Module 2, students apply the patterns of the base ten system to mental strategies and the multiplication and division algorithms.
In reading we are studying the history of Jamestown, Virginia. Ask your children what they've learned so far! All of their work is compiled into a portfolio in the classroom. Soon, we will have students sign out their notebooks to take home so we can share our studies with you!
Students have a working understanding of what happened during this time. Here is a little blurb about the skills students are developing in this unit: In this unit students will work through stations to develop their learning and understanding of Jamestown, specifically the major events and how people worked together to survive. This is the beginning of our study of democracy and working together democratically. The specific skills that students will master are note taking using Cornell notes, answering constructed response questions using A.C.E, writing from a historical perspective through journal and letter writing, analyzing primary sources using observation, questions and reflections, and persuasive essay writing. Our first excursion is next week! We will be going to the Grow Haus to learn about sustainable farming practices. Our new EfS unit is about making healthy and sustainable choices. Students will be working on making a choice in their own lives and tracking data regarding the progress of their choice. On this excursion students will be researching sustainable food practices and choices that a local company makes.
A permission slip and liability waiver was sent home with each 5th grader. Please sign these and return them to school. Students will not be allowed to go on our excursion without the liability waiver signed and returned. Each class will visit the Grow Haus for two and a half hours on Thursday, October, 8. They should bring: - sack lunch - wear tennis shoes or other closed toe shoes Thank you to all who could join us for Back to School Night. Here is our presentation. Please email with any questions that you might have.
