Fifth Grade Science Highlights over the few weeks:
1) Family Life Programming begins this week. If your student did not turn in a permission form I emailed on Friday. Please let me know as soon as possible if you would like them to participate. A copy of the permission form is attached here. 2) Just a reminder! Our Museum excursion is this Wednesday, May 11! We are very excited to go tour the museum. Opt-Out forms went home with students last week. That means that students WILL be allowed to come to the museum unless you send the form back saying you would not like them to attend. I have attached a copy of the form below. Please contact me as a soon as possible if you would not like for your student to attend the field trip at the museum. 3) Many of you have volunteered to chaperone our May 11 excursion. Look for a follow up email around 5:00 tonight for your final student groups. If anyone would like to join please let me know today! 3) Save the date for a special science exhibit from 4:00-6:00 here at the school on May 26. This will be a follow up event for the elementary school field day. On April 5, 2016, Denver University Mathematics Professor, Dr. Alvaro Arias will be presenting math logic problems to students and talking with students about how math is used in a variety of professions. Dr. Arias is originally from Guatemala. He has taught mathematics at the university level in Israel, Texas, and Colorado.
On April 8, 2016, (Friday) there will be a fraction, decimal, percent party. There will be a party for math block 1 from 8:30-10:00, for math block 2 from 10:00-11:30 so that both classes will have a party. To make these parties better, it is requested that each student brings a $2.00 donation to buy supplies, food, and drinks, if you would rather bring a drink or food to school for the party you are welcome to substitute that for the donation as long as there is a way for students to know what ingredients there are so we don’t have any allergic reactions. We are doing this to give the students a super awesome, well earned fun party. Also coming up is, Community Day on April 16, 2016, which is a Saturday. On Community Day other events are the demonstrations from DGS students. There will be all kinds of different demonstrations from each class. Watching your child’s class do a demonstration can be really fun. there will also be a bike giveaway hosted by the Bike Depot.
Don't forget our parent meeting is tonight from 5:00pm - 5:45pm in room 116.

Utilice esta lista para prepararse para nuestra excursión Balarat. We are excited to share with you that that we have two more excursions coming up. We will go to Ameritowne on February 1st at the Young Americans Bank in Denver, CO. We have have jobs at Ameritowne and will earn fake money to buy real things, such as snacks and drinks. Your child filled out a job application that will decide the job he/she will get. Also, your child took a skills assessment and a risk assessment that gave an idea of the jobs they would be good at. In EFS, we have been learning about the jobs in Ameritowne. Next week we will learn more about Ameritowne and what we will do there. For example, we will learn about all the vocabulary and we will vote for a judge and a mayor.
We will also go on a ski trip on January 26th. We will leave at 8 in the morning and come back at 5 in the evening. Make sure your child gets to school around 7:30 and we will get back to school late, so make sure your child has arrangements can get home. A green permission slip was sent home that has a list of all the supplies that you need to bring. If you have all of the supplies, great. If not, Mr. Truit will provide them. You can sign your child up for ski/snowboard lessons for free or, if your child already knows how to ski/snowboard, they will demonstrate to a teacher. If they pass, they will have permission to go up the mountain with a DGS teacher and ski/snowboard all they want. If you don't take the lesson, you will need to pay 10 dollars for rentals, if needed. Post written by Grace Camacho and Sienna Arnett Dear 5th Grade Families! We are excited to share with you that we will be having a three day trip to the Balarat Outdoor Education Center from February 9-11. This will be the first class at DGS to have the opportunity to spend two nights at Balarat. Balarat is a very unique and special trip exclusively for DPS 5th grade students. Here is the Balarat website for your information. http://balarat.dpsk12.org/ In order to ensure a safe and successful trip, we need you help. Today we sent home a yellow Balarat permission slip and a medical information packet. Please read and complete the forms by the deadlines listed at the bottom of the medical packet. We would like all yellow Balarat permission forms to be turned in by January 15, 2016. We will also offer an evening information session about Balarat for parents. This session will be run by a Balarat staff member and we strongly encourage parents to attend. We are confirming dates and will send an additional email in the next week. Please continue to check our DGS 5th grade website for updates and information. This is a very exciting time for 5th graders and we appreciate your continued support! Ms. Martinez and Ms. Zendle
I CHALLENGE all 5th graders to participate in our Winter Reading Challenge. Track your reading on the following sheet, have your parents sign it, and bring it back to school in January!
Winter Reading Challenge Tracker In Module 3, students’ understanding of addition and subtraction of fractions extends from earlier work with fraction equivalence and decimals. This module marks a significant shift away from the elementary grades’ centrality of base ten units to the study and use of the full set of fractional units from Grade 5 forward, especially as applied to algebra. This unit began in mid November. There will be an end of module test the week of December 15, 2015. |
